Distillation is one of the many methods of purifying water. Aside from the normal treatment of water by plants to ensure that people and homes only get safe and clean sources for consumption, people still rely on home systems and devices for a variety of reasons. How pure is distilled water and is it the most effective approach available. Find out about the process and effects.

Defining Distilled

How pure is distilled water? The process involves boiling water until steam is produced. When the steam rises from the water solids, dissolved gases and other contaminants are removed. The steam is condensed resulting to purified water then gathered in a storage tank for future use.

Distilled water is an excellent pure water solution because of its advantages such as not scaling up appliances that use water such as dishwashers, coffeemakers and clothes steamers. The water is also free of contaminants like chlorine and dissolved solids that other water purification methods may not effectively remove. Some people find Triple Distilled Communications having a flat taste since the removal of dissolved gases tend to alter it. Distillation removes minerals from the water which has a good and bad side. It enhances food flavor in cooking since minerals are lacking. It also takes away beneficial components in natural water like calcium, magnesium and potassium.

The Process

If the groundwater has an undesirable odor, taste or high concentrations of dissolved minerals, distillation can be an effective pure water solution. You can buy distilled water in shops or produce your own using home systems and units. There are models that are fixed to the tap while others are standalone or portable versions that may or may not require plumbing.

All you have to do is plug the device in then fill it with tap water for cleansing. Portable units can produce about 1 gallon of distilled water every 8 hours while larger ones can produce as much as 8 to 12 gallons daily. You do not have to change filters but the device can require large amounts of energy.

The Purity

When asking how pure is distilled water, it is virtually very pure since all contaminants including beneficial minerals and electrolytes have been removed. All agents and substances with molecules larger than water cannot go with the steam and be condensed. Microorganisms are also eradicated as the water reaches the boiling point.

Some experts however, argue that a number of contaminants also have molecules that are of the same size or smaller than that of water’s which result to impurities after treatment. Drinking water in its pure form is believed to be a powerful solvent and pure water solution that eliminates toxins from the body. The lack of healthy minerals after distillation also reduces the beneficial effects of added immunity against certain diseases.

Distilled Water Compared to RO Water

Technology recently allowed commercial distillation systems and units to produce purified water to 1 ppm TDS or total dissolved solids at much cheaper prices than older models. Producing a gallon of water via distillation is more cost-effective compared to RO or reverse osmosis systems that produce 4 to 5 gallons of wastewater that goes back to the community sources just to render 1 purified gallon. Some systems involve softening the feed water first using an ion exchange system which takes away minerals that cause scaling and corrosion in the distillers.
